Hello, I'm Jennifer, and I started Poiema Web Development in 2023 after I was made redundant from my job as a software developer.

I have had a diverse career history, having trained as a Latin teacher and competed a PhD in Classics before becoming a software developer in 2015.

My first steps in coding came from an online course and before I'd completed the first exercise I was hooked - ancient Classical languages and computer code are very similar and use the same skills of logic and systematic approach, so I felt I'd found a practical skill that would play to my strengths and get me a job!

I completed a degree apprenticeship at Northumbria University in Newcastle, gaining a 1st class BSc (Hons) degree in Digital Technology Solutions, and had seven happy and productive years working with a great team of developers on a range of different websites and applications.

Now I'm launching on my own as a freelance web developer.

Why Poiema?

Poiema is a Greek word and comes from the verb poiew meaning 'to make' or 'to do'. Poiema therefore means 'something created' or 'made'. However, it is sometimes translated as 'creation' or 'masterpiece' and has the sense of something not just 'made' but 'made exactly as it should be' or 'made very well'.

I chose poiema as the name of my company because that's what I do when I make websites and software: create something, not just to exist and do an ok job, but form an application to the best of my abilities; as near a masterpiece as I can make.
